Luke 2:15-18 15When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” 16So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
Commentary: Leaving their “post” to check out the baby might have lost these shepherds their jobs. You have to wonder how long it took them to find the right baby in crowded Bethlehem. And yet, it must have had a profound effect on these workers. They spread the word, even though the reaction was likely to have been skepticism as well as amazement. This is a quality of the Christian message; it is spread person to person, even when the story must have seemed unlikely to the hearers.
To Ponder: What would it take for you to “go and see”? Have you ever shared your faith with someone you did not know? Why not?
