Luke 1:64-66

Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue was loosed, and he began to speak, praising God. 65The neighbors were all filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea people were talking about all these things. 66Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.

Commentary: In verse 64, the verbs are doubled, which is a common intensifier. After months of silence, Zechariah is finally speaking again! No wonder the neighbors were in awe. And in verse 66, the word for hand literally means “power”. Zechariah is clearly a changed man after his silent retreat.

To Ponder: When has God “loosed your tongue” in a powerful way? Are there words that you need to say to family or friends during this Advent season? Do you need a time of silence in order to be ready to speak?
