Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.”
Commentary: “Do not be afraid” or “fear not” appears hundreds of times in the Scriptures, in both the Old and New Testaments, and often associated with angels and messengers. You “have found favor” with God can be translated many ways, as charis means that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech. Imagine what Mary’s reaction must have been to the prophecy that her son would be given the throne of his father David to reign over the house of Jacob!
To Ponder: Have you ever received a “troubling greeting”?
If you believed that God had sent a messenger to you personally, what would be your reaction?
Do you believe that the angel’s prophecy came true? Is this your view of Jesus?
